Calais, exile medecine

Documentary

Within a context of generalised hostility, there exists a place in Calais where migrants are still welcomed and cared for. The hospital and its "OAC" department - Open-Access Care- are a place where a listening ear and kindness can still be found, in the name of public service. Claire Lonnoy, nurse, Wilfried Barbier, patient transporter, the A&E physician, Mohamed El Mouden, and even the psychiatrist, Philippe Legrand, work in Calais where they doctor the headaches, stomach aches, scabies or tuberculosis, and of course, the border wounds (from run-ins with tractor trailers, fingers severed by barbed wire, etc.), and take care of the anxious and traumatised exiles.

With no special training for it, these citizens are confronted daily with the violence of the exiles' living conditions. After several years, they are pulled between enthusiasm and fatigue, between kindness and difficulties understanding. These healers incarnate the hospital institution and they continue their work on the front lines. Their encounter with the exiles has changed their lives and their ways of caring for patients.
